Cops arrest a man with no evidence for the murder of an 18 year old girl, sentenced to death
Meet Bryan Stevens a current student who is planning to become a defense attorney, wants to help people
Bryan graduates from Harvard law and going down to Alabama to try and help people, dangerous for a black man
Meet Eva Ansley who will be working with Bryan for the people on Death row who need legal council
Already being subjected to racism by the terrible people in the town
Terrible and humiliating moment for Bryan being strip searched to meet with clients
Bryan is willing to help the people that deserve the help
A lot of the people in the jail had lawyers who didn't fight for them, disgusting mistreatment, system failed these men
Meet Johnny D the man from beginning of the film and has no faith in lawyers and feels helpless
See the inmates talking to each other in their cells
Bryan looks into Johnny D's case and doesn't think he did it, learn about his case and how flawed the evidence is
Big draw of the town in that To Kill a Mockingbird was written here in Monroe Alabama, it's like the town points to that as proof they aren't racist
Whole black community comes to see the lawyer at Johnny D's house, all believe in Johnny
Multiple people can point to his whereabouts at the times of the murder further proving he didn't do it
Johnny D cheated on his wife with a white woman, white community used this as fuel to pin the murder on him, disgusting
Bryan doesn't charge money for what he is doing
More evidence revealed form family friend but afraid to put himself out there with his testimony as he could become a target but agrees to sign a statement
Johnny D wants to know why he's helping people for no money in Alabama, Bryan gives a powerful story about community
Johnny accepts Bryan's help
Back at the cells multiple people are working with Bryan, Herb got a execution date, he's the one with PTSD from the war
Eva gets a bomb threat at the house for working with Bryan, more racist people doing terrible things
Bryan opens the Equal Justice Initiative with a real work space now and a secretary
Cops come after Darnell for his statement
Bryan confronts the sherif who is obviously racist too
Infuriating continuously seeing hate and injustice of scared white people
Cops start to mess with Bryan now too and pull a gun on him, sending a message
Cops scare Darnell off of testifying
Bryan goes to meet Myers and he won't talk about Johnny D, gives him some info about the girl that was killed, more lies from the cops just trying to get a conviction
Myers on tape saying he knows nothing about the murder, contradicts the cops statement from him
Bryan's stay if execution is denied and Herb will be put to death instead of getting the help that he needed from his country, another man let down by the system
Sad scene with Herbs friends in jail telling him he isn't alone, emotional
Bryan goes to see Herb after he has been prepared for the chair, powerful scene, sending his flag from the army to Bryan, really emotional stuff
Whole process of strapping Herb into the chair is excruciating to watch, with the song playing, cel mates making noise to let him know he isn't alone, amazing part of the film from last goodbyes to his death
Hits Bryan hard too
Bryan confronts Meyers about his original testimony, moved him to death row too for not testifying, he was treated poorly too and was manipulated into lying, sherif was in on it and asks Meyers to take the stand in his retrial
April 1992 see if Johnny will get a retrial and Mayer's takes the stand and was obviously manipulating into not saying anything to get Johnny out
Myers overcomes his fear and says that Johnny didn't do anything he said he did, great moment of humanity
Bryan then pours on a ton of evidence supporting Johnnys release
The guard who was terrible at the beginning of the film seems to be progressing in his beliefs
Judge doesn't allow a retrial, insane and Myers testimony is thrown out
Son stands up for dad in court and is arrested for contempt
Johnny won't go in his cell and fights back as he is upset about the trial and his son
This guard has a nice character arc, knows what he has done is wrong and changes his ways
Johnny seems to accept his fate now that everyone knows the truth at least
Next step submit to the state Supreme Court
Bryan goes on 60 minutes to make this case global and show the evidence they have showing Johnny is innocent
Three months later EJI has grown and Supreme Court orders a new trial
Prosecutor gets time to build a new case to keep Johnny on death row, Bryan tries to talk some sense into him
March 1993 new trial, new judge hearing case and Bryan asks the case be dismissed immediately
Prosecutor doesn't object to the motion, agrees to dismiss all charges, great moment, Johnny D is free
At the jail everyone in the cells makes noise for Johnnys freedom
His community welcomes him back with open arms
1993 US Senate hearing for the death penalty with Bryan and Johnnie speaking in front of them
Bryan got Ray and many others free from his amazing work
